Position Summary:

The Communications Manager leads communications at the Committee for Economic Development, which is the Public Policy Center of The Conference Board. The Manager strengthens the Center's prominence and impact by enacting communications campaigns that resonate with the public policy communities.

The Manager reports to The Conference Board's Associate Director of Corporate Communications.

Responsibilities:

Digital Media

  • Manage LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.
  • Amplify engagement and following by showcasing a range of thought leadership, including op-eds and TV appearances, letters to Congress and Administration, podcasts, webcasts, and research (e.g., infographics).
  • Develop a weekly newsletter for the Center's Trustees.
  • Help develop The Conference Board's weekly newsletter for the CEO community.
  • Work with design and video teams to develop infographics and videos based on our latest analyses.

Traditional Media

  • Develop press releases for reports, which cover topics including education reform at all levels, health care, taxation and regulation, debt, infrastructure, women's economic advancement, and trade.
  • Place and edit op-eds from researchers, Center Leader, and Trustees in appropriate media outlets.
  • Monitor news cycle to identify media opportunities to pitch our research and/or experts for interviews.
  • Identify opportunities for media coverage and cultivate relationships with key media.

Event and Foundation Communications

  • Develop and enact communications campaigns for events, including Policy Conferences, Capitol Hill briefings, monthly webcasts, and Awards Dinners.
  • Support foundation grants through digital media and traditional media campaigns. (Most of the grants involve advancing education reform at the state and local levels.)

Essential Functions:

  • Lead communications for our Public Policy Center, the Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board.
  • Provide communications support in the areas of traditional media, digital media, events, and outreach to the public policy communities.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent communications and writing skills are a must; experience distilling dense topics into messages with broad appeal.
  • Skill in pitching and conversing with the media, which includes reporters, editors, and producers.
  • Skill in promoting public policy-related content on social media.
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to multi-task and be flexible, while delivering accurate and on-time results.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and get along well with others, to build credibility and trust that the job will get done.
  • Skill in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel are required.
  • Must leverage resources across the organization to complete deliverables and keep internal customers informed of status updates.
  • Strong ability to keep projects on budget and schedule.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of experience in communicating public policy.
  • Ideally, this person will have public policy experience at a non-profit, association, Capitol Hill, state house, government agency, or PR firm.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Excellent writing skills; experience distilling dense topics into messages with broad appeal.
  • Media relations experience, including drafting press releases, placing bylines, and pitching the press.
  • Social media experience, including posting to or managing the accounts of an executive or organization.
  • A willingness to promote non-partisan public policy ideas to both sides of the political aisle.
  • A relationship builder, including with internal stakeholders, social media audiences, the press, and public policy communities.
  • Experience in integrated communications, including working with other marketing and communications professionals on a range of initiatives such as newsletters, website copy, videos and infographics, internal announcements, and brand definition.
  • Based in New York or the surrounding states.
  • This individual will telework full-time, 5 days per week, until we resume on-site work. Once resumed, individual will work at the organization's NYC headquarters 5 days per week.
  • As needed, travel to The Conference Board's office in the Washington, DC area.
